This session will explore how we can utilise unused or underused spaces as new capital for the community.

Led by Richard Good, a Streetcraft Scholar and Special Adviser to the previous Northern Ireland Minister of Justice, this session will highlight a new project that he is leading at Hydebank College to utilise unused space to engage and benefit both the local community and the students at the College. We will also hear from Norrie Innes who has transformed the East End of Glasgow through the refurbishment of the old Barras marketplace into a trendy events and studio space.

This session will be held in Hydebank Wood College, a college for young offenders which focuses on education, learning and employability and will present the opportunity to hear from current staff and students. Expect an interesting discussion on the potential of space, involving local communities in shaping emerging local projects in Belfast, and learn from a range of perspectives and unusual suspects.

Turnaround is a radical new project that will take the transformation at Hydebank into a new phase and place Northern Ireland at the forefront of prison reform and social innovation. Hydebank College is young offenders centre, which provides a secure environment in which young men (18-21) receive education, training and support to assist them in making a successful return to life in the community.

Turnaround aims to turn around the future of people leaving prison, by giving them real jobs in businesses and tackling the barriers between them and employment. The project also aims to turn around the use of Shannon House to support people returning to the community.
